Question

Windows XP in domain suddenly jump timezone, always to vladivostok. Why?

Asked by: Stefan_SS

I work in a windows 2003 domain with windows XP clients. Our timezone is european GMT +1 (Stockholm, Berlin...) and we have suddenly had the problem that some clients in our network has a completely wrong time. When looking into it I see that the affected clients all have their timezone set to Vladivostok in russia, which is +10 hours. This make for some problems as people are depending on their computers to signal them for meetings and so on. Whats worse is that som servers also have had their timezones altered. I run McAffees corporate suite of programs and all affected machines were updated with windows latest patches and scanned for malware of anykind. Nothing. I´m flabbergasted. We also employ quite tight rules for people in regards to using internet that completely blocks all usage of facebook, youtube, twitter etc since these sites are of no use to our business.

Any ideas?

After studying your comments it's still conceivable that you have an infection issue.
Therefore recommend downloading then updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
When updated, reboot into Safe Mode by selecting F8 at bootup & run a scan.

Tutorial available, if you require >
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t169669.html

If you cannot run MBAM, that in itself is indicative of an infection.

You may also wish to try the Kaspersky free online virus scanner which is a good way to find out if you have any viruses or spyware without having to uninstall your existing McAfee's corporate suite of programs >

My servers and domaincontrollers all have "(GMT+01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Bern, Rome, Stockholm, Wien" as timezone.
At the beginning of this year we had a lot of computers infected with a nasty virus called "conficker" and it took a lot of work to purge our network from it and its ramifications. We worked close with McAffee and isolated the files and sended them in for analyse and had antivirusdefinitions written specifically for our version of conficker. After this experience I  always think "virus" or malware when something odd happens...

It was the thought that maybe you had an infection that led me to the suggestions above.     Recently assisted a case where Conficker was the problem.

These two removal Tools were used, listed in order of effectiveness .. you may wish to try at least one of them to see if it detects any remnant of that earlier infection >

Made another search and found this previous thread.  If you are still investigating possible re-infection by Conficker, scroll to the comment by demazter (dated 20/08/09) and you'll see that the "sophos.com" removal tool was used, together with a suggestion to stop the virus spreading.
If required, that ConFickerFix.txt should still be available to download >

Hello,

I suggest you try the free avira boot cd to scan those computers while windows is inactive.

http://www.free-av.com/en/tools/12/avira_antivir_rescue_system.html

I did have hands on an infected computer lately and the antivirus solution was able to delete some of the malware. After a reboot it claimed the computer to be clean.

When I did a scan from that bootcd I found out that every single exe file in the windows partition was infected. A rootkit was able to mask all attempts to find the virus while windows was running.

The affected computers seemed to be free from virus but later one of them had a trojan installed. Thank you all for good ideas!
