The user at home had cached credentials on their home machine using the old password. The machine allowed them to log on using the wrong password and then tried to use it with the VPN connection.
This often happens and there is no easy solution. Often logging in with the new password to the VPN works and then locking the screen and unlocking again using the new password will sort things out.
