How do you stop a "brute force" attack on your server?

Asked by submarinerssbn731 in Operating Systems Network Security, Windows Network Security Questions

On my server in the event viewer I am seeing failed logons that are happening about 1 a second.  To me this is a sign of a brute force attack to gain access to my server.   What is the best method to prevent this from happening?
