Limit to number of userids in /etc/group (and/or NIS group map)

Does anyone know the limitation of the number of userids that may belong to a single entry in the /etc/group file? There seems to be a limitation of around 112 userids. (It may be a function of physical line length, rather than number of userids.) If the length for a single line in this file grows too long, I see the following errors when making the NIS group map:

1831-367 entry too big
makedbm: 1831-375 problem storing 1831-367 entry too big
makedbm: 1831-375 problem storing updated group

If I clean up /etc/group to where there are fewer than 112 userids, everything works fine.
Does anyone know a workaround (that I can have more userids belong to a group)?
Or, if there is a limitation, where is it documented?
(AIX v5.2)

Thanks in advance,
