Question

Installing and configuring Samba on AIX 5.3

Asked by: run_time_error

Hi,

I am trying to install Samba on my AIX 5.3 box.
Although Samba comes pre-installed on most
of the other OSs this is not the case here
(unable to find smb.conf file)
Can anyone tell me the steps to install and
configure Samba? -samba.org has very little info
about samba on AIX.

Any help will be highly appreciated.
Regards,
rte

Mention at least TWO of OS-es preinstalled with samba.... (All Linux counts as one OS)

Specific packages are here:
http://www.bullfreeware.com/ (preferable)
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html (2nd choice)

(make sure you install perl.rte from AIX cd before any of mentioned before)

http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu/ (better compile yourself if you ever compiled )

Rest is editing config files to your liking, as samba.org suggests.

Hi gheist,

The sites :
http://www.bullfreeware.com/
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html

do not have samba for AIX 5.3 but have it for older versions of AIX.

Is it OK to install from binary from
http://aixpdslib.seas.ucla.edu as I have found samba for AIX 5.3 here.

Best Regards

It is best to install samba for latest version of AIX form bullfreeware or IBM, since thay conatin packaging information like file list and checksums.
AIX version signifies oldest version package runs on, and which in turn is AIX version where package was compiled.
IBM collection compiles everything on AIX 4.3.3
Bull seems like recompiles on new AIX version when this would yield some improvement over being compatible.
aixpdslib does it all ad-hoc

But would using Samba for AIX 5.2 or earlier work on AIX 5.3 ??
since Bull and IBM both have older versions

In case of bullfreeware and ibm linux toolkit you have the option to uninstall nonworking packages.
Last time I checked bull packages for 4.3.3 worked on 5.1 just fine.
If you should resort to aixpdslib check out bffcreate from bull to make them uninstallable
If you compile sources, go with rpm-build from IBM collection to make rpm to be installed and uninstalled, but be warned that you will not succeed in first try.
great thing is smb.conf can be configured once and copied over and over as needed.

My main concern is that being on a production
system what would be the best(safe) option to
install Samba. I would prefer installing it from
a binary and I do not want any compatibility
issues either that might risk my system.

Have you ever taken any IBM AIX course???  Compiled program on AIX ???

Read any of licences. That is wonder and not warranty that keeps AIX working. Install bullfreeware - it never had any extra defects besides the original software bugs.
IBM RPM for long time held OpenSSH package that locked out users randomly.
I've abandoned aixpdslib in favor of rpm-build when it comes to choice between controlled compiling and putting binaries around system in random places without any track what happens.

I am quite new to AIX and that is why asked....
Anyways I just want to know if Samba(exe from Bull) for AIX 5.2 will work on AIX 5.3?

by: gheistPosted on 2006-04-05 at 05:16:57ID: 16380551

I just checked - works with 5200-04 and 5300-02 ( 3.0.4.0 smbclient connected and listed other server using set smbpasswd )
Already deinstalled - expect no more tests from me

I have many compat and adt packages, but samba does not use them even when looked at bff dependecies or ldd.

.exe files on bullfreeware are info-zip sfx (not windows executables) gor AIX, so install "unzip" from same bullfreeware to get files out of them.
