The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sorry, mine has quite a lot more stuff running on it.. I have two web servers and many connections going on simultaneously... most of the ip addresses I see are local 127.0.0.1....

03.19.2008 at 04:31PM PDT, ID: 21166944
But do you have another ftp server running like proftpd ?

03.20.2008 at 01:12AM PDT, ID: 21169036
The last command will show this info if it's in /var/adm/wtmp.  However if you want a more specified FTPD logging then my suggestion is to use the aix syslogd deamon for this.

Ftpd man page:

---
    Quote:
-l Sends logging information about ftpd daemon operations to the syslogd daemon. If you specify the -l flag, you must edit the /etc/syslog.conf file and add the
    following entry:

    daemon.info FileName

If you do not edit the /etc/syslog.conf file, no messages are produced. After changing the /etc/syslog.conf file, run the refresh -s syslogd command or kill -1 SyslogdPID command to inform the syslogd daemon of the changes to its
configuration file. For more information about debug levels, refer to the /etc/syslog.conf file.

---

You need to edit inetd.conf to include the -l option to have it log by default.
Like: ftp  stream tcp6 nowaitroot /local/bin/tcpd6       ftpd -l

You will also have to touch the log file before refreshing because syslogd won't log to a file if it doesn't already exist.

Is this option for IPv6 ?

03.20.2008 at 03:30AM PDT, ID: 21169721
Yes it is. It's current TCP with minimal changes for IP6.  But with either the IPv4 or IPv6 protocols,
specifying a proto value of tcp6 should be sufficient.

Ok... does any of that help me?    :-)

I'm not sure which FTP server I'm running, it's probably the one that came with the basic AIX...  I do know that I have IBM HttpServer running on there as well as an Apache server.  But in any case, I am only trying to find a history of who logged on to my machine using FTP.

03.21.2008 at 01:46AM PDT, ID: 21178735
I think the only option you have is the wtmp file...

You said: "i tried.. it gives me thousands of lines....  some unreadable..."

If there are unreadable lines in the output of last you can try to convert from binary to acsii and redirect to a dummy file:

/usr/sbin/acct/fwtmp < /var/adm/wtmp > dummy.file

Be shure to have enough space for the dummyfile. You should be able to read the dummy.file then.

If not , then your out of luck on this one and you should consider setting up logging. As an admin it's crucial to know what goes on on your systems.

03.21.2008 at 05:07AM PDT, ID: 21179322

You said "setting up logging".... ok.. so supposing that the administrator of the server has set up logging...where would he typically put the log file? Is there a standard place on an AIX unix system?

03.21.2008 at 06:47AM PDT, ID: 21179823
/var/log/ftpd.log
