The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

As I was reading some information about IBM AIX, I found that it's a unix operating system. I do know some unix commands while I was using sun solaris, however what is the difference between IBM AIX and sun solaris?. Also I was told that if I intend to use IBM AIX, I must have good scripting bacground. What type of scripting background?.

For me, the biggest difference is that you can't install AIX on a desktop machine (there is no intel based installation), and that's not the way for solaris.
Everything else can be done, one way or another...
Is it "if-then-else-endif", or "if-then-el_if-end_if", and such simple things (which can give you a headache), or the way Solaris and AIX make a RAID chain, or...  Operating systems DO have some difference, but the usual commands like vi, ls, mv, cp, ssh, mail, kill, and so, exist on almost (if not) all *nix operating systems...
Not only for AIX, for every system you need to know at least shell scripting. For scheduled jobs (cron), for backup procedures, for this and that...
My guess is that somebody tried to scare you away. But if you have experience in at least Solaris, I bet you'll find your way around in AIX.
What would be your occupation on AIX?

I don't know why you should more about scripting concerning Aix than Solaris

Solaris and Aix are both Unix System V Unix variants.

As with every Unix (and Linux) variant: You will have to get akquainted with
it's specific administration commands and tools.

You can easily compare Unix variants, using the "Unix Rosetta Stone" at
http://bhami.com/rosetta.html

I will be dealing with a banking system and it uses IBM AIX. I was mentioned by other developers that I must have a good shell scripting background to deal with IBM AIX. Shell: sh, csh, zsh, tcsh

04.22.2008 at 06:22AM PDT, ID: 21410816
No need to worry. Or, you could ask developers to be more specific, so you'll see what reasons they are speaking about...

04.22.2008 at 07:06AM PDT, ID: 21411199
Sometimes, people create several tools to ease day-to-day administration.
Therefore, you may find a lot of shell scripts (and perl stuff) on these boxes
and you will have to get akquainted using and understanding it -- even
maintaining these scripts.
But there is no difference between Solaris, Aix, HP-ux, etc. -- it's always
specific to the customer's environment ;-)

The default AIX shell is ksh - ksh93 is available as standard in current versions. csh is available but I recommend against using it - using it is a long ago dead fork in the road. You can get bash from the internet but you may not be able to install it on a banking system.

Are there any ways of practising how to use ksh script on my windows xp home pc or on a 3rd party server?.

04.22.2008 at 10:47AM PDT, ID: 21413619
You can install cygwin on Windows -- or use Microsoft's "Windows Services for Unix" which can also be downloaded for free.

The best way to learn Unix is using Unix itself, obviously.
You can download and use Solaris 10 (for x86/x64 in your case) for free from Sun's website. You only will have to register for a license.

Also, installing Solaris 10 in VMware is supported ;-)

If you don't want to mess with installation, you could download knoppix, a free live linux distribution cd, which has ksh in it.
Knoppix ISO image can be found here:   http://www.knoppix.org/

04.23.2008 at 08:20PM PDT, ID: 21427554
In regards to http://www.knoppix.org/

It means I can run it from my CD?.

04.23.2008 at 11:19PM PDT, ID: 21428105
Yes, without any installing. You don't even need a hard drive.

04.24.2008 at 12:08AM PDT, ID: 21428307
There is also a Solaris live CD available, called BeleniX
Actually, it's created from OpenSolaris.

You can get more info and download it from here
http://www.genunix.org/distributions/belenix_site

04.24.2008 at 09:44AM PDT, ID: 21432788
In regards to http://www.knoppix.org/

Does it also come along with csh?

04.24.2008 at 10:14AM PDT, ID: 21433060
In regards to cygwin does it support all the shell?

04.25.2008 at 01:52AM PDT, ID: 21437842
a) knoppix includes ksh, bash, csh and a few others -- but as already said:
I'd refrain from using the old and aged csh
b) Cygwin has csh and bash at least (don't remember if it has ksh included,
    but I do think so)

04.25.2008 at 03:17AM PDT, ID: 21438099
I think I better buy the knoppix CD cause it will take me ages to download on my 1MBPS broadband connection :)

04.25.2008 at 09:10AM PDT, ID: 21440910
knoppix size is 696 MB, can it fit into a CD-R?

04.26.2008 at 09:32AM PDT, ID: 21446018
I manage to install it on a 4GB thumb drive.

04.26.2008 at 04:48PM PDT, ID: 21447209
It can fit into a 700 mb cd-r, the old ones with 650 mb size are pretty rare nowadays...
But if you have it on a thumb... That's ok...

04.26.2008 at 09:54PM PDT, ID: 21448203
suprising part, everything works. I attempted to use csh and ksh but failed. Im using KNOPPIX_V5.0.1CD-2006-06-01-EN.iso. As for csh and ksh, I downloaded the package from the debian website: http://packages.debian.org. When I tried to install the packages using:

dpkg -i bash_3.1dfsg-8_i386.deb
dpkg -i csh_20060813-1_i386.deb
dpkg -i pdksh_5.2.14-20_i386.deb

on using the terminal I am getting the error: requested operation requires superuser privilege. To overcome this problem I executed the command above in the root shell. It works. However when I restart my knoppix the installation disappears. I type ksh, bsh, csh on the terminal and it does not exist. All this is done on a thumb drive.

04.28.2008 at 12:50AM PDT, ID: 21452160
As far as I know, ksh and csh is built into the Knoppix distro already and there should be no need to install it on top of it.
Anyway, as Knoppix is a "Live CD" distro, you will loose most (if not all) changes when you reboot. Only config changes can be stored on a USB device. Detailed info should be available on the Knoppix site.

05.12.2008 at 09:25AM PDT, ID: 21548312
I tried test commands like -ne and it shows invalid command in sh.

05.13.2008 at 01:59AM PDT, ID: 21553237
Try this:
  if [ 1 -ne 2 ] ; then
echo "one is not eqal to two"
  fi

This is plain Bourne Shell / Korn Shell code

05.13.2008 at 03:32AM PDT, ID: 21553638
Yes I tried:

#!/bin/sh

if[$# -ne 3]
then
fi

and im receiving the following error:
command not found
syntax error near unexpected token 'then'.

05.13.2008 at 05:52AM PDT, ID: 21554491
You seem to be missing some blank (space) characters!

There must (!) be a blank between if and [, between [ and $ as well
as between 3 and ]

Please copy my code using "cut-and-paste" and you should be OK.

05.13.2008 at 06:26AM PDT, ID: 21554798
it works, perfect.

05.13.2008 at 06:48AM PDT, ID: 21554975
As with every programming language you will have to pay close attention to syntax constraints ;-)
