Please follow the steps below:

1- from command line run

stty erase <press backspace key followed by enter>

Do not use <> above since I just wanted to show what you need to do.

2- in your .profile under home directory (for sh / ksh / bash) add the same command, but for vi to ignore the backspace key as a delete command and while in insert mode press cntrl-V followed by backspace key. Then Esc then save and exit from .profile. It you are using csh / tcsh you need to put this in .login file.

JustUNIX:

The keyboard behaviour also depend largely on the terminal emulation
software you use.
If you are using putty, you can change the BS behavior under "Change
Settings", "Keyboard". Usually, the BS key sends Ctrl-? (which actually
is DEL) and not Ctrl-H (which is BS).
