g++ pthread_init failure on AIX

I am attempting to compile a large applicaiton on AIX 5.3 with gcc 4.2.3-1 (I have been using an IBM compiler and this code runs without error).  The compile and link works, but I get a SIGSEV in pthread_init, with this stack trace

pthread_int ()
call_pthread_init()
__threads_init))
__modinit()
__start

when examining the stack via gdb.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
