The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

upgrading ssh 1.5 to ssh 2 on Windows

Asked by funaroma in FreeBSD

Greetings Experts!

History:

We have several client servers that were using cygwin/rsync with SSH to mirror some of their data off-site to our Linux server.  It was working great, however recently we've decided to go with FreeBSD. We set up the logins on the FreeBSD machine, and sshd is running, and all the keys have been copied to where they belong.  The problem is that when we try to connect using:

ssh -v -l {username} {server}

at a Windows command prompt, we get this:

SSH Version 1.2.26 [], protocol version 1.5.
Standard version.  Does not use RSAREF.
SERVER01: ssh_connect: getuid 500 geteuid 500 anon 1
SERVER01: Connecting to {server} {ip} port 22.
SERVER01: Connection established.
SERVER01: ssh: make .ssh directory, pw_dir is {correct local directory}

SERVER01: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_3.8.1p1 FreeBSD-20040419
SERVER01: Waiting for server public key.
Local: Bad packet length 1349676916.

From what I can tell, and from the research I've done so far, the issue seems to be that the FreeBSD server is running ssh protocol version 2, while the windows client we're currently using is only running protocol version 1.5  (that's only a guess...)

So my question is, how can I either:

Get the cygwin/ssh command on Windows to use protocol version 2 (preferred), OR

Allow my FreeBSD machine to accept protocol version 1.5 (less preferred), OR

Figure out if there's something else wrong?

Because this is urgent (several clients are right now unable to mirror data off-site), I am assigning this question 500 points.

Thanks!

Marc
