Question

vsftpd missing value in config file for: enable for standalone mode

Asked by: strangepl

Hi,
 I have just installed VSFTPD on a Centos box and I set up an ftp user and password from root. When I try to restart VSFTPD i get:

Starting vsftpd for vsftpd: 500 OOPS: missing value in config file for: enable for standalone mode

Can anyone help please I show the /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf file below:

Comment out this conf line as first effort:
enable for standalone mode

I commented out the standalone line and tried to start VSFTPD and I get:

Starting vsftpd for vsftpd: 500 OOPS: could not bind listening IPv4 socket

I did see that port 21 is being litened to by tcpsvd:

# netstat -pan | grep :21;
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:21                  0.0.0.0:*                   LISTEN      3829/tcpsvd

Not a FreeBSD thing anymore...

by: nabeelmoiduPosted on 2009-08-27 at 03:07:38ID: 25196215

The "enable for standalone mode" was supposed to be the  comment for the next line
listen=YES

As for the port not binding, its could be that some other service is listening on the port 21

by: gheistPosted on 2009-08-27 at 07:27:47ID: 25198577

Actuall there is some sort of "tcp wrappers" listening.
In this case it logs something - just connect check service banner and daemon and xfer and messages log.
Post what looks suspicious.

Hi Guys,
 thanks for your help I found out what the problem was. I am using SME server and I did not realise that it has it's own ftp client built in and it was already bound to port 21
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:21                  0.0.0.0:*                   LISTEN      3829/tcpsvd

Thanks for being my safety net.

Regards,

Paul

Can you reuse it for ftp needs or you need help with anonymous sftp? Or you will get vsftpd running on different port by yourself?

by: strangeplPosted on 2009-08-28 at 09:10:41ID: 25209104

I have removed vsftpd and I am just using the SME Server (which I did not know had an ftp client) I just allowed external connections in the SME client and bang! I could log into the public side of the server.

Thanks for your help much appreciated.

Paul Lewis-Brown

Just to clarify , its not ftp client. Its an ftp server. A client connects to a server. Its teh server that listens to a port
