OpenSSH works on restart, but breaks after 15 minutes or so of transfer

I have openSSH installed on freebsd 7 amd64

When I restart it works fine. I can connect via ssh and via sftp. I start transfering things via sftp and after 10-15 minutes it just stops working, says waiting for connection. At this point I can no longer ssh in.

I am still connected to the router from both devices. Can still ping from the laptop to the server and the server to the laptop.

I tried restarting sshd and netif. They both restart successfully, but still can't connect.

I get a variety of error messages from the ssh from garbled packets, to network not available, to connection timeout.

I don't know if there's a specific log file for openSSH, in the auth.log there are no error messages. Just the logs from my various sshd restarts.
