So I have openbsd 3.7 with kde installed on a amd64. In particular, the motherboard is a gigabyte GA-k8vm800m. The video is on the motherboard. The best resolution I can get is 640 by 480 as shown in control-peripherials-displ

I have the same video card and i cant raise the resolutions :
I runned the command and thats what i got :
linux:/ # X -configure
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

So you run KDE I assume - and i do not know how did you get to this.
Make sure it does not start as first effort. most likely kill -TERM `cat /var/run/kdm.pid`
Then run X -configure
And copy new xorg.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and run kdm -nodaemon once more to check out
If this fails -
run xorgcfg -textmode and enter your hardware spec (driver is "via", not s3 or virge or savage).
"man via" says that K8M800 is supported....

Sure - Radeon 7000 or 9000 up to 9200 ( man radeon )
Matrox G* ( man mga )
All those are under $50
S3 savage is well supported too, but in either case you can assume absolutely latest video card from average maker will be supported in half year.
Try running X -configure
And in the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log you will see autodetected driver.
If this is not VGA or VESA - your card is supported.
