Question

Poptop connection issues on OpenBSD

Asked by: loniadmin

Hello everyone,

I am running OpenBSD 4.4 and am having issues with poptop 1.3.
When I try and make a PPTP connection it gets to the final stage and then dies.  The /var/log/messages error is:

Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus pptpd[31899]: CTRL: Ignored a SET LINK INFO packet with real ACCMs!
Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus pptpd[31899]: GRE:

I also have a large output from /var/log/ppp as I set poptop to debug mode.  The part of it that looks like it could shine some light on my issue is:

Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus ppp[31799]: Phase: Chap Output: CHALLENGE
Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus ppp[31799]: LCP: deflink: RecvIdent(3) state = Opened Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus ppp[31799]: LCP:  MAGICNUM 32bb4e34

Jan  7 15:21:39 cerberus ppp[31799]: Phase: deflink: Connect time: 4

Looks like there is a Chap failure.

CHAP failure == invalid password on your side...

by: loniadminPosted on 2009-01-09 at 10:26:24ID: 23338619

Yeah, I figured that when I tried to connect from my mac and received authentication failed .   However, I am not sure how this is possible.

I have tried setting my name and password in both chap-secrets and ppp.secret and finally even tried to have pptp use my /etc/passwd file.  Everything has proven to be unfruitful.

I  am only using mschapv2 as  have chap and pap disabled.

Thoughts?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but it seems like you are telling me that if I want to use mschapv2 then I have to have samba installed.  If that is what you are saying, I am not sure I agree with you; unless you can tell me for a fact that is the case.

All the online examples use mschapv2 and say nothing about samba.  Moreover, looking through the poptop Q&A does not say anything about requiring samab.  However, it does talk about pppd being able to use mschapv2.

http://poptop.sourceforge.net/dox/qna.html

If you are not saying that mschapv2 requires samba, but rather, you have to do something special to use the samba name and password then that point is kind of moot as I don't have samba installed.  From my understanding ppp should read in the username/passwords from ppp.config.

No MSCHAPv2 there: http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=pppd&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=OpenBSD+Current&arch=i386&format=html

Why don't you use VPN with encryption like OpenVPN or IPSEC?

by: loniadminPosted on 2009-01-12 at 16:38:09ID: 31532121

Well you are right, there is no MSCHAPv2 in there.  Upon looking futher this just has to do with OpenBSD's ppp.  FreeBSD's (and I assume linux) ppp has MSCHAPv2 as an option.

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=ppp&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+7.1-RELEASE&format=html

I didn't go with OpenVPN because I don't want to have to download the client everytime I want to connect.  IPSEC on OpenBSD does not work well with Windows.

I think I will try and find a windows boxs or just use chap.

Thanks for your help!

You somehow contradict with yourself. Actually isakmpd of OpenBSD and racoon of NetBSD are IPSEC reference implementations, and they work especially well with SafeNet VPN client included in Windows XP.

by: loniadminPosted on 2009-01-13 at 14:08:03ID: 23367841

I don't want to use SafeNet VPN client because I don't want to deal with 3rd party software.  I like the PPTP functionality that works out of the box with Mac and Windows.  I don't want to be at some random computer having to download and install software to access my local network.  Moreover, the OpenBSD IPSec solution does not work will with the buildt in IPSec on WIndows.  Not sure what the case is with OS X.

In addition it does not look like you were totally correct with your recommendation.  The like you gave me with pppd (which does not have mschap-v2).  However, it is supported in ppp and it says nothing about samba.  Just ppp.secret.

Windows XP has SafeNet VPN client builtin, from another planet system, not from third party. It works well with reference implementation - openbsd's isakmpd. Sorry you did not notice. http://vpnc.org and "man isakmpd" for more information.

by: funtaffPosted on 2009-01-23 at 16:18:55ID: 23454315

I'm curious what the SafeNet VPN client is and what you mean by "from another planet system" - I've only heard of the enterprise level VPN client from them.

by: gheistPosted on 2009-01-24 at 12:47:13ID: 23457992

They developed VPN client for Microsoft, which in turn was included in XP.

by: funtaffPosted on 2009-01-24 at 16:34:15ID: 23458960

Where would one find information on using this client?
