FreeBSD Apache 1.3 SSL

I am looking to add on SSL to an existing apache-1.3.39_2 install in FreeBSD. The server is live and I'd prefer to keep this as safe and quick as possible with minimal downtime.

is it fairly safe to build an apache SSL version out of the ports? what is the best option for a quick/safe install?
