The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

I once got this error when a disk failed and the files (namely the HP-UX kernel) got corrupted :-(

Are you sure you are booting from the correct disk drive?

If you have another drive, try to boot off that one instead.

I have two disk drives. I modified the primary boot path in ISL to boot to the other disk and get the same problem.  By default hpux is going to the /stand/vmunix directory.  Is there anyway to truly say the disk is bad.  In a windows environment I usually do this through the RAID or DISK utility.  I dont have much experience in Unix so this is the first time i've ran across this.

Did you verify the boot paths in ISL ("search for boot devices") ?

You may want to try an alternate kernel (the provious kernel when you built a new one):
  hpux (;0)/stand/vmunix.prev
or in single user mode
  hpux -is (;0)/stand/vmunix

From BCH command prompt try:

search ipl

This should give you info about available bootable devices. If your disk is not on the list, the only way is to boot from recovery tape and restore boot structure of your disk. In general, errors like this are usualy related to hardware problem. Probably disk failure or even controller.

dragulj, that's why I asked to verify the boot devices' paths ("search" in IPL)

12.20.2007 at 11:32AM PST, ID: 20509227
In the BCH I ran
search ipl
and received the following results:

Path #        Device Path            Device path MNEM         dev type
P0             0/0/1/0.1                  extscia.1                       random access Media IPL
P1              0/0/1/1.15               intscsia.15                     random access media IPL

The device path 0/0/1/1.15 is my primary boot path, so does this mean the hard drive is ok but the boot file is corrupt???

Try to go to ISL by executing

boot pri isl

Say YES if asked to interact with ISL.

If you are there then LIF area is probably OK. Now execute

hpux ls

This should show you content of /stand

If you see vmunix, try

hpux /stand/vmunix

If you get the same error like before, try another kernel from /stand (if you have one)

12.26.2007 at 12:10PM PST, ID: 20530673
I ran "hpux ls"
and did see the contents of stand.
I ran "hpux /stand/vmunix"
and get the following error
"exec failed: Exec format error"
How would I try another kernal from /stand?

hpux /stand/vmunix.old

Sorry, typo! Forgot the "boot" keyword.
Run
    hpux boot /stand/vmunix.old
or whatever kernel you have.

What do you see with hpux ls? Put that listing here.
