The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

HP UX Printer Help

Hi,

We have just installed 5 new ricoh MP4000 which replaced our ricoh 2022's.   I've added the new ones in the system through SAM and copied the way the previous ones were installed.  The printers are now disabling themselves and I can't  reenable them through SAM.  I've tried also doing it at the command line with no sucess.  I've checked the port details and the ARP table details and everything seems okay.  We have also installed 5 ricoh MP4500 which is the colour version and I have installed these the same way and they aren't disabling themselves.  any help?

a) Are these printers networked? Meaning, you access them via TCP/IP

b) Can you telnet into the printers? Can you ping them?

c) What does "lpstat -a" show?

d) What does "lpstat -t <printer> -l" show?

Hi,

We've had our support people looking and they have now got me to iinstall the printer through sam and check the box that says the printers are running on a BSD system.  This seems to have stopped the printers disabling.  We now have another issue with printing reports to the printers.  If you force print the reports they print fine.  but if you print to batch it only prints the report header.  Now our software company has said the issue is with the UNIX box and not their software.  this is their response

"We believe the problem lies with carriage return line feeds and knowing when to stop when batch reports are been printed from these new Ricoh printers. I believe that the spooler configurations for the printers need to include filtering for carraige returns and lines feeds for all new printers on your HP machine"

Any ideas on this ???

If you have incorrect handling of carriage returns, your output will come
in a stepped manner:
The text
  This is
   a test
   to print
   on a
   printer
will come on paper like this:
1:
2:
3:
4:
5:
6:
  This is
           a test
                   to print
                              on a
                                     printer

Try printing a normal file, like
    lp -d printername filename

If you get the above pattern, try
   ux2dos filename | lp -d printername
instead.

Hi JustUNIX,

You were right, when I tried to print using the first command the print came out as per your above comment.  Then whe I tired using the second ux2dos command the test print came out fine.  So how do I configure the spooler, or what do I need to do resolve this issue?

Thanks for your assistance!

Using
   lpstat -t
should show your printer setup.
For each printer you have a file /etc/lp/interface/<printername> and
a symlink /var/spool/lp/interface/<printername> to it.

The "filter" program ux2dos will have to get included in this script file.
You may want to try adding ux2dos to the rlp command.
a) Save y copy of the original interface file
     cd /etc/lp/interface
     cp <printername>  <printername>.SAVED
b) Edit the interface file and insert the following before the line with
       /usr/sbin/rlp -I....  $1
1:
2:
3:
cp $1 /var/tmp/$1.spooler
ux2dos /var/tmp/$1.spooler > $1
rm -f /var/tmp/$1.spooler
Accepted Solution

I don't know if rlp can be used in a pipe. But it is worth trying to
replace the original "/usr/sbin/rlp ... $1" command with something
like
   /usr/bin/ux2dos $1 | /usr/sbin/rlp ...

I've just found this, which is pretty much similar to your problem. He
finds the spool file (request file), modifies it using awk and calls rlp
afterwards:

Hi,

Before I try this would the remote printer name have anything to do with this? The old ricoh printers have the remote printer name as PORT1, the HP printers we have are set as RAW and lastly we have some Zebra printers and they are running as LF1.  please excuse my ignorance not only am I a HP UX newb, but I'm also a UNIX newb.

I really appreciate your help.

06.11.2008 at 07:03PM PDT, ID: 21765700

I just had another thought, the old ricoh printers which were replaced by the new ones have been redeployed and they don't seem to have the problem.  So would I be able to use their configureations?

06.12.2008 at 11:04AM PDT, ID: 21772071

Rank: Master

Some printers do have several "logical ports".
Depending on your type of network printer, these ports may have
names like "P1", "LP1", "RAW", "PORTx" and so forth.

A name like "RAW" indicates that data will get processed unaltered,
any other is dependant on the manufacturer's intentions ...

06.15.2008 at 09:35PM PDT, ID: 21790801
Is there anyway I can see which ports have been setup?

If so will changing this option work at all?  or do you have to change the interface config?

06.16.2008 at 01:43AM PDT, ID: 21791725

Rank: Master

You will have to look in the manufacterer's docs what options and ports he has defined. Unfortunately, I don't know about a meachinsim to probe these.

Glad I could be of some help!

How did you finally get it to work now? Using a different port name
or changing the interface script -- or both?
