The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Chances of corrupting Oracle Db in abrupt HPUX shutdown;  which logfile (in which directory) shows oracle shutdown

Asked by sunhux in HP-UX Unix, Oracle Database

Tags: , ,

Hi

We have the following root cronjob in our HP-UX B11.23 to
shut down Oracle every morning 2am before Data Protector
takes a cold backup of the database files (not a raw partition) :

15 02 * * 0-6 (/usr/bin/su - d01adm -c "/oracle/D01/admin/switch_log"; /sbin/init.d/sap_ora stop)

Problem now is the root account as well as the oracle accounts were locked &
after checking with HP, there's no way to recover the password unless I do
an abrupt shutdown & our Oracle are not configured for Online Rman backup
(that's why we take cold backup).

Want to check the oracle logfile to see if last night's SAP/oracle are properly
shutdown (in case the cronjob did not run due to locked accounts as I know
in Solaris, an "expired" root account will prevent root cron jobs from running).

Which directory & file contains the message indicating the shutdown?

What are the chances that Oracle database (about 120Gb) will be
corrupted if we do an abrupt HP-UX shutdown considering that :
a) today is rather quiet (no user data entry or data entry jobs)
b) SAP application is still up (could not shutdown SAP as I
don't have the SAP Unix password too)
