mac osx wont boot from external lacie drive usb/firewire to install and repair os.

i have a mac g4, and it will not boot from a lacie external firewire/usb drive.   the drive is dvd, and cd/rw.  i tried he  shift+cmd+del, also the t alone and the c keys.  it still comes up to the old hard drive.

how can i boot to install the new osx 10.4 on this unit.
