usermod question...

Hello,
I am running Redhat 6.1.
If I try to change a users password using usermod, the encrypted password gets saved in the password file AND shadow file.
There is nothing in the man usersemod which refers to the password or shadow files.
How can I make it so that it only modifies the shadow file? leaving the password file intact?
