Could you specify what unix platform do you have? Solaris, AIX, HP-UP, SCO Unix or Linux?
Besides, Oracle change the option or configuration from version to version.
So for Oracle 7 and 8 (yuzh)
$ORACLE_HOME/orainst/inspd
For Oracle 9i
ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus -version
Or (gheist)
------------
plsql /nolog
connect ....
SELECT * FROM sys.SM_$VERSION
-------------
The following command may not accurate since you can change oracle install path during the installation.
cat /etc/oratab | grep prod

file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
