The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

How to Print/Format LPR/LPD Unix-type Jobs to Windows Queues

Asked by e_sandrs in Unix Operating Systems, Linux Printing, Windows 2003 Server

Two parts to this question, first the easy one:

Can we send print jobs from *nix-type systems to a Windows 2003 print queue?  What do we need to do to set this up? (vague details are fine - I don't need step by steps)

The harder one:

Assuming we can print to Windows, how can we format the content sent to the Windows server for proper alignment and scaling?

The details:

We currently generate print jobs on an HP-UX system and send them to various Linux boxes running LPRng.  Because this output was originally designed for wide, line printer, paper we need to format many of the reports in LPR to custom layouts for printing on standard 8.5"x11" paper (landscape and landscape  with compressed text - for example).

Due to staffing changes and departmental mergers we are considering moving all printing to one or more Windows 2003 (or '08) servers for administration by non-*nix-folk.

We may be moving off of the HP-UX server onto a yet to be determined replacement - but the new box will be one of the following: HP-UX again, Sun Solaris, or Red Hat Enterprise -- so I don't think that really matters.

Many of the printers will need to accept both the *nix content and typical Windows Desktop printing.

So, can we use Windows as our print server for both *nix server and Windows Desktop client print jobs - with formatting controls on the output?

Thanks for any info you can provide - if this gets more detailed that I think we need to be right now I'll throw more points on the fire...
