Can't get tape drive to work

Tags: SCO, OpenServer, 5.0.7
I'm trying to do a restore on a system running SCO OpenServer 5.0.7.  I've done some research and I THINK I'm adding the tape device correctly.  I've used 'mkdev tape' to add the tape.  There are a few questions in there I don't know the answers to, so I've been choosing the default.  I do know the adapter number, the LUN, the hardware ID and the buss and have entered those numbers as needed.  The information given by the SCSI adapter on pre-OS boot corresponds with what I get when I do 'sconf' after boot.  The drive is an old Seagate STT8000N.

However, when I try to use 'cpio -icdvu -I /dev/rct0' is gives me an error saying that it can't use the device for input.  I've also tried using '/dev/rStp0' and that gave me the same error.  I think I'm close.  But, there's something I'm obviously missing.

The motherboard is an Intel using on-board Symbios SCSI adapter.  I didn't see that SCSI adapter when I used 'h' in 'mkdev' to show me the list.  But, it seems to add the drive using the default 'wd'.  Do I need to add the driver for that SCSI adaptor?  If so, how do I do that?

Also, I'm adding the tape drive as a SCSI drive.  But, after I add it, it shows up as an EIDE tape drive.  I'm sure that's important.  I just don't know how.

PLEASE include all steps in your answers because I don't know much of squat about UNIX.  This restore is time-sensitive.  Thank you for your help.
