Do a "man tape". There are a number of subcommands under the tape command and there should be one for showing the compression settings of the tape device you would specify in the command. Most of the tape commands do require a tape be loaded in the drive when the command executes.

Compression is turned/off or on based on the command you use and depending on the tape drive might be the /dev/resource reference you use as well.
What tape drive are you using? Are you using dump? Check the tape drive information
i.e. dump /dev/something versus /dev/something else could mean a 20/40 or 80/160 compression.
