Morning all,
A machine that has been running perfectly fone for ages has suddenly stopped alllowing rlogin connections.
We use Mutliview terminal emulator to conect to the server, and it defaults to rlogin. When connecting Multiview just opens then immediately closes. We can telnet to the server without any problems. This is across multiple client machines.
Some odd things noticed on the server.
When I try to ping the client machines from the server they come back with an odd hostname.
For example, one client machine is called RS-VISTA
When I ping RS-VISTA from the server I get the following:-
PING rs-vista.ourdomain.co.uk (130.40.50.214): 56 data bytes

s
64 bytes from host.jsc.nasa.gov (130.40.50.214): icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=0.565 m
s
64 bytes from host.jsc.nasa.gov (130.40.50.214): icmp_seq=4 ttl=128 time=0.583 m
s
The IP is correct, but that hostname is completely wrong! The same is triue when I try other machines, they all come back with that odd hostname. Is this part of the problem?

It depends, different unix protocols use different methods for finding hostname, some will follow the order in /etc/nsswitch.conf, others will use /etc/hosts regardless.
It seems like a bad idea to use a reak public address, owned by someone else for one of your servers. You should be using an rfc1918 IP scheme for internal servers.
My install doesn't have an /etc/nsswitch.conf file.
If I add the fully qualified domain name for the client into /etc/hosts with it's corresponding IP I can then connect from that client with rlogin
However, the clients are on DHCP so I cannot really keep the /etc/hosts file correct all the time.
/etc/resolv.conf has the IP address of our DHCP and DNS server set as a nameserver, so I would have expected it to have given the correct name and address.
As for the IP range I agree, but it something I've recently inherited here. I've no idea how long this clash has been going on for.

That IP address appears to be host.jsc.nasa.gov (a NASA IP address), if you are in fact trying to connect to this server you won't be able to.
When you telnet, are you using hostname or IP?
It sounds like maybe you have a clash between your local machine names and real internet DNS.
