How do I open UNIx, is it like opening windows?

I am completely a beginner. How do I find unIX/LINUX on my computer? Is it installed on windows? do I have to switch to Unix? I want to run the vi editor in lunux/unix do I use Korn shell.

Basically how do I open Unix, is it like Command Prompt, or an operating system on its own... HELP no idea...
