How do I upgrade from PHP 5.1.6 to PHP 5.2?

I have a dedicated server and I need to upgrade my PHP from 5.1.6 to 5.2.

Can someone give me step by step, idiot proof instructions?

I am running CentOS if that matters.

"yum update" if this is CentOS
config file remains in place, new PHP kicks in, just restart apache if not done by installer.

It asks for confirmation after displaying upgrade plan, so no danger trying it...

I entered yum update at the shell command and watched as it said it was updating and installing things.

It did not ask for any confirmations...it just started updated after I hit enter.

I rebooted the server and checked my PHP version and it is still 5.1.6...but I saw where yum said it was upgrading it.

Any ideas?

Do you have any particular requirement for 5.2 that is not satisfied by securely patched 5.1?

Magento requires it. I may try doing the php-cgi work-around.  Thanks for your help. I did not know about the yum update. That will come in handy.

Give 5.1 a try. CentOS does not include 5.2 in any release

Magento requires 5.2 and won't install on my 5.1.6.

But there is something called a PHP-CGI install for Magento that supposedly works.

System requirements are PHP 5.2.

When I tried to install it, it told me it could not as it needed PHP 5.2.

I then read that I can do a PHP-CGI work-a-round to make it work on older versions.

I thought it would be easier to just update my PHP.

You can edit required php version inside installer.
CGI does not seem like way to go...
