The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Please help me with installing SCO OpenServer

Tags: SCO, OpenServer, 5.0.4, Installation
I am trying to install OpenServer 5.0.4 on a PowerEdge 2300.  The system is configured with three 9GB SCSI drives in a RAID 5 configuration on a Perc RAID controller, a SCSI CD Rom on a Adaptec 7860 controller card with 1GB RAM and two PII 350 processors.  We have downloaded the controller drivers for the Perc and 78xx from the Dell website and put them on floppies using Rawrite.  The boot string seems to be working but the install blows up after selecting the SCSI CD Rom as the media device.

If possible, please start by telling me what the proper boot string should be.  I'll be happy to provide all the details of the install up to the failure if helpful.

Why SCO and SCO 5.0.4, it is about 10 years old OS?

SCO is getting out of the market.

Consider Solaris x86 or Linux instead of SCO.

What type of CPU you have? for SCO it should be intel, for SCO 5.0.4
it might have problem with P3 or newer. (I have only try it in P2 or older machine about 10 years ago! SCO does n't work with AMD CPU at that time!).

Any way if you still want to install SCO check the SCO site to make sure your hardware is support by SCO, CPU, NIC graphic card, SCSI adapter etc. or you can get driver for SCO from the vendors.

If you are install from SCSI CDROM, you need to check the BIOS settings to make sure boot from SCSI CDROM is enable and make it as the first boot device.

please have a look at this docs/notes:
http://osr507doc.sco.com/en/HANDBOOK/CONTENTS.html

Set the boot sequence of your system BIOS to start with the CD-ROM drive

This will help you understand the reason for SCO 5.0.4.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Unix/Q_23109615.html

The hardware has been certified by SCO so it should work.  The plan is to load SCO then the ERP application and database.  Its purpose is to be a backup in case the current hardware dies.

Thanks for your help.  This is very important.

I don't seem to be getting any help with this question.  Can anyone point me to a consultant that might be able to help with my situation?

Have you look at the links in my first comment? Once you can boot up the SCO OS CD from the SCSI, the installtion is very straight forward.

also have a look at the following examples:

Yuzh- I appreciate your help but none of these posts are addressing my problem.  I have spent a great deal of time scouring the internet for solutions including coming across most of the links that you have provided.

OpenServer 5.0.4 doesn't boot from the CD.  You must use the floppy to boot.

>>OpenServer 5.0.4 doesn't boot from the CD.

From my memory SCO 5.0.4 can boot from IDE CDROM, I did it in 199?.
The problem is that SCO 5.0.4 might not have the drivers for your hardware, I have only run SCO 5.0.2 5.0.4 for P1 and P2 CPUs
The key point for you is to find the driver for Perc RAID controller and NIC, if you have to use X Windows, you also need to have the driver for the graphic card.

I think it is easier for you to find a old PC with intel chip set + IDE HD and IDE CDROM to install the OS. I'm not sure if SCO 5.0.4 can run on a P3 or newer CPU.
BTW, dell is not a good option for SCO, I remember I was having some trouble with dell PCs. (BIOS problem etc).

     Good luck!

The CDROM is SCSI not IDE.  If I put a Windows OS disk in the CDROM and boot the server it boots to the CD and starts to load the OS.  The SCO 5.0.4 disk does not boot the server besides we have the boot floppy that came with the software which makes this point irrelevant.  I have the 5.0.4 drivers for the server which I downloaded from Dell.

If will end up trying the install on another box but I am fairly certain that we will run into one problem or another.  At that point, I will be right back to where I am at the moment.  IDE may be easier but it is not an optimal solution since I am talking about running the companies ERP system.

I don't know what you mean by "blows up".  Does it hang, panic, give errors...

I think SCO 5.0.4 had issues with the alad driver that shipped with it.  You may need to link in the new alad driver at boot and possibly specify the Srom config in the boot string.

From SCO:
The enclosed Support Level Supplement (SLS) OSS463B, the Multiple SCSI
Install N0 Supplement, allows for the installation of SCO OpenServer 5.0.4
operating systems on computers with CD-ROM drives attached to secondary
host adapters.  Previously, it was only possible to use these CD-ROM drives
by configuring them after the installation of the operating system.

Find the supplement here:

http://www.sco.com/support/ftplists/osr5list.html

This link from Acer also has some info:
http://www.acersupport.com/ess/html/9100b_release.html

The installation seems to go fine  up to a point.  After the "Identifying Media Device" screen where SCSI CD ROM is selected with the correct Adapter, ID, LUN and Bus, the next screen give the following error:
"Error initializing access to device /tmp/cdrom;
There may be a bios setup problem or other hardware configuration error on that device.
Notice: Flushing PERC Adapter
Safe to Powere Off or Press any key to Reboot"

The drivers were all downloaded directly from Dell though I've since been told that these drivers could be bad.

Install some old PCI SCSI (lsi/adaptec/symbios) adapter to PCI BUS 0 and attach CD-ROM to that. Thiss will let you install system and install patches so that everything is as compatible as advertised.

03.26.2008 at 11:09AM PDT, ID: 21214543
I will see if I can find a PCI SCSI card.  However, I do know that the existing SCSI controller is working because I was able to install Windows 2003 with the CD.

03.26.2008 at 12:04PM PDT, ID: 21215066
Did you look at my post above?

ftp://ftp.sco.com/pub/openserver5/oss463b.ltr

oss463b specifically "allows for the installation of SCO OpenServer 5.0.4 operating systems on computers with CD-ROM drives attached to secondary host adapters".  Without this supplement you can not install from a secondary SCSI controller - this is your exact problem.

The problem you are having requires an updated alad driver.  I would use the replacement boot floppy that the supplement gives you.  You could use rawrite to create the floppy under windows.
Accepted Solution

03.26.2008 at 12:09PM PDT, ID: 21215088
This does indeed look like my exact problem since we are using the original floppy.  I will not be able to re-attempt the install for a day or two but I will report back as soon as I can.
