SVR4 Unix - Problem copying large files

We have a SVR4 server that we want to use as a backup server. We can copy across small files no problem using either FTP or the rcp (rmote copy command) but when we try to copy a large file (1.5gb) the system freezes around the 250 mb size everytime. I think it could be something to do with the tuning parameters not allowing us to copy/create file over a certain size. I think the 2 parater files are called stune and mtune but i am not sure what paraters i need to change.
