Question

set up NTP on Solaris 8

Asked by: gmichels

We're moving our NTP service from an older system to a new one. Can someone give me clues on how to set up NTP on Solaris 8? I am REALLY new to Unix and have only a limited amount of familiarity. I know nothing of writing scripts for Unix. Points will increase to anyone who can provide me with good insights!

I followed the steps I found here:
http://www.geocities.com/danilody/standard/ntp.html

What I have done so far.

1> I downloaded and added the NTP 4.0.99mrc2 package.

2> I copied the ntp.conf file from the older system and moved it to the new system and placed it in the proper location according to the abovementioned website.

3> I created the S168ntp file and put it in /etc/rc2.d directory. The correct path for the NTP daemon is present and the correct path for the CONF file is there.

When I reboot the system, NTP doesn't launch and after I manually launch it, I still can't synch with that server.

Anyone have any clues what more I might need to do?

by the way,

daemon is located at  /usr/local/bin/ntpd
conf file is at /usr/local/doc/ntp/scripts/support/conf/ntp.conf

Here are some of the things you need to do.

You don't need to install another version of ntp. ntp comes by default with the OS.

on server:-

copy /usr/inet/ntp.server to /usr/inet/ntp.conf and

change your server and broadcast addresses (you can leave broadcast (This is a multicast address) as is...if you don't want to touch)

on client machines :-

copy /usr/inet/ntp.client to /usr/inet/ntp.conf and change the multicast address (If you happend to change the multicast address on the server) otherwise you can leave those two as is.

restart your xntpd daemon and you should all be set.

I tried and it works.

before I get going and change everything, is there a way I can simply test it to make sure it's working? Can I just do an RDATE from another unix (or NTPDATE from Linux)?

by: gmichelsPosted on 2001-12-17 at 11:24:57ID: 6681515

I found my inet directory under /etc instead of /usr but I presume all still applies.

Also found xntpd in two places:

/usr/lib/inet/xntpd
/etc/init.d/xntpd

I presume I use the second? Or does it matter?

Can I just keep the ntp.conf file we used before? NTP is working fine on the other system as it is and I don't see anything that really needs to be altered for the new ntp.conf file. As for the client machines, we really don't want to change anything except the reference to the new machine, if need be. Multicast is set up on the old ntp.conf file so I presume I shouldn't need to change anything if I can keep the old ntp.conf file?

and lastly, how do I get NTP to start at boot?

I told you, I am really new at this.  Thanks!    :-)

our present ntp.conf file:

server time.apple.com
server ntp1.mainecoon.com

peer time2.ks.netopia.com

broadcast 224.0.1.1 ttl 2

logconfig =syncstatus +sysevents
driftfile /etc/inet/ntp.drift

Hi,

It's /etc/inet/ntp.server or ntp.client only. I think I misled you by giving wrong path, sorry about that.

you can start ntp daemon using /etc/init.d/xntpd daemon.

You can keep your ntp.conf file. The above file looks good only for the clients provided the server names are same, otherwise you may have to change the server names in the above config file. You have to change the server config file. Server should also be on the same broadcast net.

Check that our and post your comments here.

okay - update.

I found that the xntpd daemon starts at boot so that is all set. I was trying to do an NTPDATE from Linux and getting an error message (unsuitable server to synch with or something along those lines). However, I found that a Unix box would update just fine with RDATE. It's apparently working and my test box wasn't working right. I'll need to look at my Linux.

the abovementioned ntp.conf file is on the server.
on the clients, it's a simple one line

multicastclient 224.0.1.1

I presume that works fine for the Unix boxes. Any idea what the Linux boxes need?
