There are there part for the DISPLAY variable, the first part is the Xserver, the 2nd is the DISPLAY, most of the computer has only one display, so the default is 0, the 3rd part is optional, it specify which screen to be used for display, 0 for the 1st, 1 for 2nd screen ..... and so on.
You can simply set the DISPLAY, like:
DISPLAY=Xserver-IP(or Name-of-Xserver):0
export DISPLAY

Where do you run the software?
I assume that your run the Software at machine A, and want
to display on machine B.
At machine B, someone has logined, and he need to type in:
#xhost +
to disable access control, so X client can connet from any host.
At machine A, you need to set the DISPLAY:
1)
for csh/tcsh user, do
#setenv DISPLAY IP-of-B:0.0
for sh/ksh/bash, do;
# DISPLAY=IP-of-B:0.0 ; export DISPLAY
2) run you program.
Here's a typical example for this case.
You sit at machine A, remote login to Machine B, and try
to run the program on machine B, display it on A;
At machine (console terminal), you type in :
xhost +
At a remote terminal, you set the display, and then run the program.
