Top is a tool that gives you a continual status on the processes running on your system... usually in decending order of RAW CPU usage, updated at a predetermined interval.
p/readme.h tml and in the man pages (if supplied and installed).
It can be used to show processes by user too.
It also shows current uptime, memory usage, swap usage, system load average, number or processes, CPU states, break down of system, user, nice and idle times on CPU's etc etc.
