Question

Mail Gateway -- POP3

Asked by: terrywong

Hi,

Currently our sun server (Solaris 8) has been configured to be able to send email. Now we want to configure this server to the mail gateway, which means that this server can receive all other client’s incoming mails and then relay them to the high level gateway. Can anyone tell me the detail step to do this (step by step)?

Thanks in advance!

you might want to take a look at sendmail.org.

Are you saying you have an email server, you want to reconfigure it to be a gateway for many email clients?

HI,

To send email is straight forward enough. You need MX record for your domain in DNS server to accept incoming email. I suggest you install BIND 9 which you can get the binary package from www.sunfreeware.com. To config it, try search DNS howto from www.google.com. The are lots of great doc out there waiting for you to explore.

For client to retrieve email from your server, just use imap/pop3. You can get the binary package from www.sunfreeware.com.

regards,
feroz

Hi Terry
I think you mean (your question is not as clear as it could be) that you want your SMTP server to be the INBOUND relay, (lets call it pluto) and then have it RELAY the INBOUND mail (SMTP) to what you are calling a high level gateway (lets call it mars). If this is correct all you need to is:

1)   Ensure the DNS MX records point to pluto and then

2)   In the /etc/mail/sendmail.cf file change the line that begins
DS

to

DSmars

The DS option simply tells sendmail who is the SMARTHOST and  where to relay all the email once it receives it.

You may also want to look at the DH option of sendmail.cf or the use of the mailertable file.

For mail collection use pop/imap of course.  See for example
http://www.mirror.ac.uk for a copy of PINE which contains a pop and imap server, or search for  qpopper, another FREE pop server.

Rick

Hi ALL:

Thank you for all of your quick responses and help. And I apologize for my poor English.

The current situation is: We have one Sun server (let’s called it as "Master") in our lab. And also we have one DNS server in the school’s CIS dept. Master’s IP address has been added in the school’s mail relay permission list. So there is no problem for this server (Master) to send email to outside (hotmail, yahoo mail,..).  We do NOT need Master to receive any incoming email for security reason.

Now, for some reason, we want other servers and pcs (around 20) in our lab can send email like Master to outside also. But school doesn’t want to manage so many relay permissions and assign so many fixed IP address to PC also. They ask us to use Master as relay server (mail gateway) to transfer all other pcs’ email to school’s SMTP mail server. By this way, they only need to manage one email relay permission, which is Master's. Again, we do NOT want all these servers and PCs to receive any incoming email either. And also we don’t need anyone can retrieve incoming email from Master (no user mail account). Only sending.

Question: what we should do to Master?
1.     Do I need to ask school to add Master’s MX record in their DNS server?
2.     Do I have to configure Master as POP server since we don’t need anyone to retrieve email from it? and how if we need?

Thanks again,

Terry
