Question

Adding Pheriperal to Sun Ultra 10

Asked by: judhi

Dear Experts,

I have Sun Ultra 10, no more warranty so I'm free to experiment.

Anyone knows what are the compatible:
- NIC
- Graphic card besides the native  PGX/Creator like Matrox etc.
- USB host adapter
- Multi IO to provide more serial port

Thanks in advanced.

Read the instruction from hardware ....

after
1. make touch /reconfigure (If you boot with /reconfigure file is as boot -r)
2. shutdown with /etc/shutdown -y -i5 -g0
3. Sun off
4. Install hardware.
5. Start the computer.
6. Install from disk or cd the software treiber for hardware.
7. make   touch /reconfigure
8. shutdown with /etc/shutdown -y -i6 -g0

Ready.

Thanks, but what are the compatible pheriperals I mentioned above?

I know Sun is very particular about hardware and always ask customer to buy spare parts from them, but I discover that some HDD, CDROM, disk drive, RAM, etc. can use other brand even if not endorsed by Sun Microsystem. Usage of any hardware from vendor that not in their list will void the warranty. Since I am already out of warranty anyway, who cares? :)

I searched Sun's website and sunsolve for about 1/2 hour and was unable to find it (sorry)
You can probably call Sun Microsystems (pre-sales) and ask them to provide you with a list.
I know it's out of warranty and stuff like this but they will probably help you find a list of compatible
hardware.

Since it's a PCI bus system, it should be fairly compatible with many products.  I'm pretty much using
the standard Sun stuff on my home Ultra5.  I think the biggest difficulty will be drivers.

(now that I'm looking into this...I'm wondering what I can put on my Ultra5 ! :)

Here's some stuff I just found:

http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U10/components.html    (It's the typical sun hardware with a couple of extras)
http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U10/U10.html

I'm currently using a BENQ DVD player on my Ultra5 (no problems...yet :)   I do notice that sometimes it has trouble reading a simple
DVD for some reason...then I just give it a minute and it suddenly kicks in again.

Good luck...sorry I couldn't help out more.

Sun sites are the first place I looked into :)

I really hope some hardware hackers out there want to share their experience.

Certainly I could do trial and error and taking high risk of damaging my only Sun, but I believe it is wiser to learn something from others who may already done it.

The 125 points might not be attractive enough but I wish I could put more if I have.

With regards to add in cards two things are generally necessary. The card needs to have OpenBoot firmware so it
can be recognized by Solaris. Second you need a driver. That might be satisfied by one of the Solaris drivers or
you may need a driver from the vendor. There is a page somewhere on Sun's site (or at least there used to be)
that listed a number of Sun compatible PCI cards.

I have read that somebody put in Linksys NIC and it works. Theoritically it is possible to do that since some NIC are using same chipset. That's why the driver works even not intended for that particular brand. I do not know how true is that but hope somebody could explain.

There may be some cards that will work, like the example cited. But I do know that disk controllers and the like really need to have Openboot firmware to work. With respect to video cards, I think that the driver issue would be the real problem. I suppose you could replace Solaris' X server to get access to a wider range of video cards,
but that seems like a lot of trouble and makes system maintenance more problematical.

Thanks to all, but unfortunatelly no clear answer yet :(

Anyway, as appreciation for all of your efforts, I split the points almost equally.
I give 40 points to all, mrquin got 5 more points for his time of searching :)

Keep your eyes on this discussion, we may have new things later.

Cheers,
Judhi
