Installing Solaris 9 from cdrom: can't read disk label

Asked by: ultra_grasshopper

Solaris 9 installation disk: can't read disk label   Sun, 05 October 2003 15:51

Hi all, have just purchased a used Ultra 10 440 MHz, 1GB RAM, 2 9GB drives and it won't boot up. When I turn the machine on it gets as far as showing the following:

SunOS Release 5.6 Version Generic_105181-17 [UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0]
Copyright (c) 1983-1997 Sun Microsystems, Inc.

Then the screen flashes a message so fast I can't read it (except something about "panic" and "mount") and then reboots endlessly like this.

I burned an installation disk for Solaris 9 (downloaded the SPARC install and burned on my Windows machine) and tried hitting Stop A during the boot and typing boot cdrom [[ -nowin]] per the Sun installation instructions, but this fails also with:

Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1/1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args: [[ -nowin]]
Can't read disk label
Can't read disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom [[ -nowin]]
Can't open boot device

And then it goes back to try to boot from the hard drive, I guess, and the whole endless reboot thing comes up.

I've tried hunting all over the net via Google but I'm too new to Solaris to have any clue what the heck is going on. Some other people out there seem to have gotten similar errors due to a bad CD ROM drive or a faulty read head, or a bad motherboard, etc.

I have also hunted on the net for a Solaris install tutorial of some kind, have bought "The Complete Reference: Solaris 8" manual and Sam's "Teach Yourself UNIX" but I don't seem to find what I need anywhere.

Anyway, I did some more research and I have come up with the following possibilities:

1. The CD-ROM drive itself is bad.

I did a probe-ide and found the model number is CRD-8322B, which, after a quick Google search, I was able to find for sale as "32X LG-GOLDSTAR CD-ROM IDE INT GREY CRD-8322B" for $11.50. So what the heck, I've ordered one and I'll try putting it in. But I don't think it's the problem, as I can drop a CD in on the current CD-ROM and listen to it just fine, and the probe-ide finds the drive OK. Is it still possible that the drive is bad?

2. The disk is not readable by the CD-ROM.

Not sure about this one, I burned it in a HP CD-RW burner using a standard 650 MB TDK CD-R and Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. I chose the option to burn a data disc and close the session when done. I have read about a 512 byte sector requirement, but apparently this does not apply to Solaris 2.6, which is what I seem to have on this machine. However, is it possible that my SPARC platform disk downloaded from http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/singleinstruct ions.html cannot be used because it was burned on a Windows machine?

3. Something is wrong with the alias for the CD-ROM.

This I think is more likely, as when I attempt to boot with the command boot cdrom, the CD-ROM drive does not appear to light up, although I can hear the disk whirring inside. However, I still don't know how to read the full device name properly nor how to use the command to change the alias. I guess I could use some help with this. The following link got me thinking along these lines: http://forums.sunhelp.org/showthread.php?s=ffa055644b93dd65e c2c135b4afada83&threadid=432

Also , at http://supportforum.sun.com/sunos/index.php?t=msg&th=245&start=0&rid=1186&S=57e675e02def42ee23a0842420dbe4c4 I found these instructions:

You should:
ok devalias cdrom - this will show you current path to internal CD. Use this to determine what new alias should look like.
ok setenv auto-boot? false
ok reset-all
ok probe-scsi-all - find the path to the new cdrom - write it down & write target # as well
ok show-disks - find the exact path you just wrote down and type that letter
ok nvalias cdrom2 [Ctrl] + [y] which will paste that path. Finish with @sd6,0:f if target 6 and an Ultra class machine [Return]
ok reset-all
ok boot cdrom2

But I can't do a probe-scsi as this is an Ultra 10 machine that uses IDE, and probe-ide does not give me a path.  Is there some similar command set I can try?

4. Something is wrong with the alias 'disk' (which is the whole reason I'm trying to boot from the CD-ROM).

I could troubleshoot this further if there was some way to read that error message that flashes on the screen so quickly before the reboot, and then is gone before I can read it! If I could just see what the full error is that it gives when it tries to boot off the disk, then I could troubleshoot that. Does anyone know how to get that info from the OpenBoot PROM? Is there a command or a log or something that I can look at?  How do people post all these text dumps of the errors they see on their screen-- I'm just manually typing the stuff in on my Windows box from what I visually see on the screen of my Sun machine.

Many thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

Sun Ultra 10 use IDE port, not SCSI !!!

You can try the following things.

at ok prompt, type in:

probe-ide

To see if the box can see the IDE CDROM, if it cann't see it, check the CDROM power cable, IDE
cable, cdrom drive, IDE port.

 printenv
# Display all current parameters and current default values

Use the following systax to change the OBP settings:

    setenv parameter value
set-default parameter -- Set parameter to default value
set-defaults   -- Set parameter values to factory default

eg, to set an aliase for cdrom:
    nvalias mycdrom /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1/disk@6,0:f

                                ^
                                 |     please replace it with the real device name

     then
     boot mycdrom

IF you still have problem, type to replace the cdrom drive with the one you know is working
for sure. IF you still have problem, remake  the Solaris Software CD #1.

    Good luck!

Thank you for the advice.  Here is some more information about the problem:

Just to make sure, I tried ok boot cdrom again and got:

Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args:
Can't read disk label.
Can't open disk label package
Evaluating: boot cdrom

Can't open boot device

ok

If I try probe-ide I see:

ok probe-ide
Device 0 ( Primary Master )
ATA Model: ST39140A

Device 1 ( Primary Slave )
Removable ATAPI Model: CRD-8322B

Device 2 ( Secondary Master )
ATA Model: ST39140A

Device 3 ( Secondary Slave )
Not Present

ok

(The ST39140A's are two Seagate 9.1 GB IDE hard drives http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/ata/st39140a.html .) Now this shows the CD-ROM as the Primary Slave; so should that last part of the cdrom boot device read cdrom@1,0:f ? Maybe I should create a new cdrom2 alias to test this?  In the example from your post it shows

nvalias mycdrom /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1/disk@6,0:f

But what I don't know is how to read each component of that path or translate that example from SCSI to IDE.

Concerning the disk--  I did burn the .iso according to the instructions (burning from image, choose .iso as the file type for the image) and tried both the installation disk and disk 1.  I tried burning another disk 1, but it doesn't work either.

Finally, after trying ok boot kadb -s, (going back to trying to boot from the hard disk) I see the following:

ok boot kadb -s
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/disk@0,0 File and args: kadb -s
kadb: kernel/unix
Size: 278005+65364+70436 Bytes
/platform/sun4u/kernel/unix loaded 0x98000 bytes used
SunOS Release 5.6 Version Generic_105181-17 [UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0]
Copyright (c) 1983-1997 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Cannot mount root on /pseudo/md@0:0,0,blk fstype ufs
panic[cpu0]/thread=0x10404000: vfs_mountroot: cannot mount root
stopped at Syslimit+0x94: ta %icc,%g0 + 125
kadb[0]:

I will try to research further what this specific message about "Cannot mount root on /pseudo/md" means, but right now that is pretty much greek to me. Perhaps the /pseudo directory has something wrong with it? Maybe there is some issue with the second hard drive?

This helps, as I feel I am getting closer to the answer, but it's still quite a challenge to figure out what the problem is. I will keep plugging away, and thanks for the help so far.

your cdrom devalias is correct.
u have to read the last part which says cdrom@2,0 mean this is on port 2. which shows from your output of probe-ide also.

I will say the cd is bad, i am suspecting the cd drive, it is installation cd which system is not able to read.

about panic it is commonly seen when something goes bad on disk or in firmware side.

could u try to load the current updated frimware on system.
also u may try reset-all and test all command from ok prompt to see if everything is right.

Actually, it looks like the cdrom alias was ultimately the problem.  (Creating a new alias along the lines of yuzh's example with nvalias mycdrom /pci@1f,4000/scsi@3,1/disk@6,0:f did not do me much good either, since that example shows scsi and uses target 6, which is inapplicable to an Ultra 10 running on IDE.)

However, I finally got this to work by doing the following:

ok show-disks - chose the letter for the cdrom drive
ok nvalias cdrom2 [Ctrl] + [y] to paste the cdrom path. Added 1,0:f to the end
ok reset-all
ok boot cdrom2

I think the problem was with the last part saying cdrom@2,0.  I think it was a conflict between the alias showing 2 and indicating secondary master, when in fact the probe-ide showed that the drive was a primary slave.

Did all this yesterday and then spent all evening installing Solaris 9. (I think I will go ahead and replace the CD-ROM too; the way it was wheezing and rattling it sounds like it's about to give out anyhow.)

The system tries to mount a SDS metadevice - instead of a single disk. It looks
like the system has had mirrored disks.
To boot from disk try this:
ok boot -sa
When the system aks for the /etc/system file enter
  dev/null
without (!) leading /.
Booting from CD ROM seem not be working due to a bad disk image. How did
you create it? Usually you can download the Solaris CD image from www.sun.com
and burn it to a CD using the "burn image" function from your bruning program.

Good to heard that you fixed the problem. I posted the real answer yesterday  (Perth time
about 2.30pm). but it dispeared !!!

Here's the message supposed to be here:

The Ultra 10 default OBP setting for  for the CD-ROM drive is with the assumption that the
CD-ROM drive is connected as the master device on the secondary channel
(/pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f).

IF you cdrom jumper setting is salve, and it is connet to primary IDE port then:

            nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@1,0:f

IF it is connet to the 2nd IDE then:

            nvalias cdrom /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@3,0:f

I think that it must have something to do with this site update.

what about for SCSI disks ?..i've done what was asked as above, doing the nvalias as well...oh..this time it's a SF4800 that 'im trying to boot up the cdrom..been trying out for hours..help please ?

thanks!

Ot the OK prompt, try to find the correct device path for your CD drive using
  ok show-devs
You should notice some disk devices with something like "sd@2,0" in their path. As the SCSI CD-ROM usually is jumpered at taregt ID 6 look for something like sd@6,0 and try booting from sd@6,0:c (slice 2).
Now, put *that* into your OBP's devalias (or try to boot from it directly using this path
You may also try
  ok show-disks
to view the device paths to your disks.
