I presume you are talking about load average. That is a reflection of the number of tasks actively competing for resources. A high load average could be from:

The machine is simply being asked to do too much.

A network resource bottleneck.

A disk resource bottleneck.

Too little memory

Without knowing more about the system's configuration, what it is being asked to do, and what tasks are causing the high load average it is difficult to suggest any specific things to do. Could you elaborate, please?

How high did your load average get to?  If it's only for a short time, then it's not really a problem.

What hardware configuration do you have?

What does the output from prstat show when the load average is "high" and what do you consider to be a "normal" load average?

It depends on what hardware you have, and what you want
to box to do, and how the system is configured.

For workstation, you should alow it has heavy load some time (unless you can spend more money to upgrade the hardware. eg: I allow some of my workstation use up to
99.9% CPU when it is run large engineering simulations.
for servers (eg, webserver, file server you don't want them
to get overloaded !)

> High load average

It is important to realize what a high load average means. That is a reflection of the number of tasks that are in a runable state and competing for resources. There are a number of reasons why one might have a high load average and you have to look at what's going on and what resource is the bottleneck.

> Server performance issue

That's too nebulous a term. It could be anything from an undersized server to a botteneck elsewhere.

In general, working these problems is common sense. You identify what's happening and then look at why.

you can use tools like prstat, ps, top, etc to find out which process is eating up your CPU and RAM.

You can use priocntl or renice to  alter priority of running processes. (priocntl  works a lot better than renice)

man priocntl
man renice
man prstat
man ps

to learn more details.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, cheers!

Please provide more information regarding what server and which OS.

for
4. I also need help with pin pointing the cause of server crash...so which log files should I check.

if you are having server crash, please look into the file
/var/adm/messages you might find some useful information there and if the savecore is enabled. you might have the core dump files saved in this directory  /var/crash/<your machine name>/

--------
post the /var/adm/messages file output for last crash and we might able to provide you more information.

there are couple of good tool to monitor system states, like top/sar/prstat and other commands mentioned above.
