Timing Tests

I am interested in finding out if there is a way that I can make sure that the OS is not cacheing any portion of a database in memory, without having to umount the disk that the database is located on.

download and install "lsof" from  http://www.sunfreeware.com
and run
lsof | grep <database disk mount point>

Say, your database is under /DB/db1

lsof | grep DB | grep db1

Are you talking about a true database, such as Oracle or mySQL? Here cacheing is an internal function of the database and hence, should be well documented.  Or are you talking about editing a flat file?

Your query is titled "timing tests" - may I ask its purpose?

It is a third party database, neither Oracle or mySQL. I am going to give the lsof suggestion a shot here in a second.

I'm not completly sure if lsof is the tool to use. You can find out if the files are open, but if the database is in memory then most probably the files are open, though not sure. (wesly: Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been quite a while since I last used lsof). However unmounting will not work eigther if the files are open.

As the title of your question is "timing test", I suppose you question has a background in this direction.

I'd rather go for some kernel parameter, such as the memory used to cache.... see i.e. this link:
