Solaris/ifconfig: Establishing telnet sessions to virtual interfaces

Hi all

A colleague presented an interesting question to me today - I was wondering if anyone might be able to explain the

behaviour

My colleage has configured a number of logical interfaces on a Sun workstation for use in a lab setup e.g.

eri0 Has the real IP address
eri0:2 Is assigned a logial IP address

We find that we can ping the ip address assigned to eri0:2 from another system, however, we are unable to establish

telnet or ftp sessions to that IP address

However, if you are logged onto the box itself then you can get a telnet or ftp connection to the virtual ip address

Is there something in inetd that needs to be configured perhaps, or is it just not possible to get full TCP

connectivity to virtual interfaces configured in this way
