VMWare server 1.04 does not show this issue. Whats your version?

Hi

This is not a VMware issue, but a Solaris issue

I think the problem is the partition from the Solaris disks and a boot issue. I am not a Solaris expert to try to help more.

You have many sites and forums, where you can see many solutions to that type of problem

Just google the problem "solaris error Bad PBR"

Some examples:

Hope this can help

This error is known to happen if the install disk is corrupted. Did you check
the md5 signatures of the iso and final disk?

Gheist -  I have VMware 1.02

BestWay - I checked these links. They are not useful at all.

Blu - I will check on this first thing tomorrow

Thank you all for a quick response.

1.04 has Solaris 10 option for operating system. Does 1.02 has same? If so i have nothing to add.

Hello,

This problem usually occurs when Solaris 10 doesn't find the type of MBR that it likes, or the MBR in disk sector 0 is missing.   In most cases, a new disk is being used that does not have an MBR from any prior installation.

My understanding is that the fdisk utility used during the Solaris install is a little dicey when it comes to writing the correct boot record to the MBR.  (It may indeed write it, but somewhere else on the disk!)

I have noted that someone worked around this by first installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux, then installing Solaris, at which point Solaris would boot properly.

I'm looking for a more "elegant" solution so it's not necessary to do two more installations!

Sorry I can't give a more definitive answer at this time....

Regards,

Don Parmentier

OpenSolaris uses GRUB and does not suffer from mentioned problems. Elegant problem is to use either on real hardware or at least SUN's VirtualBox

In my case I was using real hardware and still had the "Bad PBR Sig" error when using a new disk.

I did try a "quick and dirty" Red Hat installation, then reinstalled Solaris--this worked fine!

"Go figure...", I guess.  :=)

Really strange... On Sparc it woks OK on clean and dirty disks.
Probably you can use Win98 boot floppy and create bootable C: disk or something.
