Solaris resource allocation/separation using project or zone?

We have a Sun server with 4 CPUs and 16GB RAM. I would like to use it for Oracle database, Oracle application server (middle tier) and other application as well. How could I designate/specify different CPUs and RAMs to different programs such as Oracle DB and Application server?

Should I use project to allocate the resource or use zone to build complete isolated environment? And how could I use project or zone? I only read about them and have not done any of them.

It's recommended to put all of your applications into zones to isolate one form the other.

As how to split up the software between zones:

- put your Oracle RDBMS into one zone
- put the Oracle application server into the same zone or a different one.
- put all your "other" applications into seperate zone(s) from the above.

You need to check out what kind of Oracle licenses you bought. If you have processor based licenses, you need to give the Oracle zone a number of dedicated CPUs that corresponds to your license. Make sure you leave one or two processors for the other zones, so you may need to put Oracle RDBMS and Application server into the same zone.

If you bought user based licenses, or have a 4 CPU license, don't worry about CPU allocation.

As to RAM allocation: don't use resource capping on the database zone, use the Oracle configuration parameters to control RAM usage.

Thanks.  Yes, I have named user licenses. Why I should not worry about license? Oracle has minimum named users per CPU. This is one of the reasons that I would like to isolate my DB and App server.

Yes, you're quite right.

The easiest way is to use Solaris 10 8/07 or an earlier version of Solaris 10 with a recent recommended patches.

When you define a zone you can use the dedicated-cpu resource:

zonecfg -z oraclezone
oraclezone>add dedicated-cpu
oraclezone:dedicated-cpu> set ncpus=1
oraclezone:dedicated-cpu> end
