The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Using External USB drive - solaris 10

Asked by sdcox in Sun Solaris

Tags: Solais 10, mount filesystem

Hello gurus
I have installed a maxtor one touch external USB drive on my Solaris 10 system. I thought I had it worked out how to put a file system on it and mount it but I've run into an issue. Its probably a simple something I'm missing, so I hope you can help! I'll put my commands in double quotes for clarity.
Here's what I did:
1.) Plugged HD in, checked /var/adm/messages and made sure solaris detected it.
2.) checked "rmformat -l " and got:
         Logical Node: /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0
         Physical node: /pci@0,0/pci1022,7460@3/pcie11,3202@0,1/storage@3/disk@0,0
         Connected Device: Maxtor OneTouch 0125
         Device Type: Removable.
3.) then i did "fdisk -B /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0"
4.) then i figured out the sectors etc and got the size of the disk and then created a text file containing the line : slices: 0 = 0, 953843MB, "wm", "Backup"
5.) after that, did "rmformat -s text_file.txt /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0" then "devfsadm" and "devfsadm -C"
6.) then created the file system with : "newfs /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s0"

that all seemed to go fine, but now I'm trying to mount the darn thing and can't get it to work. I tried :
"mount -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0 /backups "
and get mount point /backup does not exist. Thought, oh duh need to make a directory so then I tried:
"mkdir /backups", then "mount -F ufs /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0s0 /backups "and got: mount: /dev/rdsk/c2t0d0p0 not a block device.
Tried "mount -F ufs /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 /backups" and got: mount: /dev/dsk/c2t0d0p0 is not this fstype.
Now I'm stuck. I'd like to mount this disk as /backups so i can write large checkpoint files to it.

I would totally appreciate any assistance.
