Question

Errors trying to register Solaris x86 for updates

Asked by: KhaiPi

I purchased Solaris 10 5/08 media and installed it on a Dell machine successfully. I then purchased a Solaris Subscription which I thought would enable me to register to receive updates and fixes. However, when I run the Solaris registration wizard I get one of two errors depending on whether I choose to activate a Sun Connection account or not. The errors are:

Error in SCN/Cacao Update License
Error in SCN/Cacao Update Contact

I have tried to resolve this by telephoning Sun support but they ask me for my contract number and when I tell them that I don't know what that is they say I need to contact my Sun representative. Clearly I don't have a Sun representative as I haven't purchased any Sun hardware. When I offer them my subscription number they say that it's not a contract number and tell me they can't help me.

So, what do I need to do so that I can receive updates and fixes to this Solaris x86 installation?
How do I get a contract that everyone seems to need?
What exactly did I get for my money by purchasing a Solaris subscription?

Thanks,

KP

What type of Solaris subscription did you get, Basic, Standard or Premium?

by: KhaiPiPosted on 2009-03-17 at 22:17:44ID: 23915686

It's Basic.

by: bluPosted on 2009-03-18 at 08:12:56ID: 23919624

Did you get any kind of number? If not a contract number, then perhaps a subscription number?

by: KhaiPiPosted on 2009-03-18 at 09:13:45ID: 23920330

Yes, I certainly did.  It's BSLR484637771.  But when I offered that to Sun support they said it wasn't in the form they needed and wasn't a valid contract or service agreement number so they couldn't help me.  I have called Sun support 5 times now, each time getting a different person, and they have been quite unable to help me in the slightest.  They always ask for my Sun representative which, as I said, I don't have because I only purchased the software not the Sun hardware.

When you call, are you calling the USA 800 number, or an Australian number? I have been making enqueries about the subscription plan, and i have gotten conflicting stories.  Let me look into this. It might take a day or so.

By the way, I have heard that there is a problem with the sun connection registering. I'll try to get an answer for you on that as well.

I have been calling the Australian number but I think it just diverts to an off-shore number, the people I speak with have Asian accents usually.

I really appreciate you trying to help me with this blu so thanks.

BTW, how did you know I was in Australia?

by: bluPosted on 2009-03-18 at 12:05:49ID: 23922366

Would you believe it was your accent? 8-)

Actually, it was your timezone in the original question.

Well, after an enormous amount of effort and lots of very appreciated involvement from blu and Sun, I have managed to register the OS.  In the end it came down to installing a couple of patches and then running the sconadm command.

Before I award the points however, having installed the available updates I now see that the Update Manager reports 115 available updates many of which are security updates but the region where the check box should be to select which updates I want to install has just a hyphen there which cannot be clicked on.  This is true of each of the 115 updates.  So what's the trick in installing these updates?

Thanks,

KP

FInally - it's done!  I now have a fully patched system and am registered for updates.  What an ordeal.

I have to say blu went out of his way to help me on this and was wonderful.  If there was a way to award 10,000 points I would do it!
