How to read device path in sol10

Hi Experts

I would like to know the procedure on how to read/understand device path and do troubleshoot

How to tell if the device is on control0 or control1
whether its a internal disk or external disk ?
Same follow for pci cards
whether its on-board ethernet port  or pci ethernet port

Example device paths

/pci@0,0/pci15ad,790@11/pci1274,1371@1" 0-- vmware virtual box. But not sure what device it is
/pci@1f,0/pmu@3/i2c@0,0/dimm-fru-prom@0,a8- not sure
/ssm@0,0/pci@18,600000/scsi@2/sd@1,0- not sure
/pci@8,700000/scsi@6/sd@6,0-not sure

I have copied the example device path from above InfoDoc.
The InfoDoc is not complete.It only describe about SUN EOL system..

I would like to learn/know how to read it and by looking at i should be able to pickup the disk or pci card.

I am unable to find any Specific Documents on how to decode the device path.

Thanks for the links
But both the don't complete entire sun system . its only covers EOL systems.

I have attached a file  of path_to_inst.
This is from v480 .. Still by looking at the path . I am unable to figure out what the pci slots are, what kind of HBA is installed and so on .
what disk are internal and external
etc....

some of the examples given are from older models but the principals are the same.

From what I remember about the 480, if there is a fault in an FRU you'll get information verbose enough in the boot diags, fault manager commands, system logs, LED;s on the system boards and by reading the labels on the boards, slots and everything else to be able to establish exactly which part is causing you trouble.

If that wasn't enough, you could always sift through all the hardware  and system docs for the v480 on docs.sun.com.

heh, as if by magic. Got this on a v240 this morning. As you can see, the fmdump tells me exactly which dimm to pick out.

Dimms i guess its easy to find

Finding Faulty dimm and its slot is bit simple compare to other devices.

prtdiag -v  will give a very good explanation on  the dimms
ECC error are easily picked up in /var/adm/messages
there are tools such as Cediag which decode the dimms size and location.

I am concern in decoding the other devices. as stated above.
