Solaris mailx - send message AND attach a file

I have read how to send a mailx message and how to send an attached file in Solaris 10.
I can do one or the other, but I seem to be unable to do both at the same time.

with attachment (testattach.txt is the attachment):
uuencode testattach testattach.txt | mailx -s "My Subject Line" rfletes@midsouthcc.edu
 
without attachment
mailx -s "My Subject Line" rfletes@midsouthcc.edu < messagebody
 
The following DOES NOT WORK as it ignores the attachment:
uuencode testattach testattach.txt | mailx -s "Subject Line" rfletes@midsouthcc.edu < messagebody

Hmm.  Still no attachment, just the body of the message...

I also tried deleting the dash after 'cat messagebody', but still no attachment.

I think order of arguments for uuencode is wrong. It should be "uuencode testattach.txt testattach"
Dash after 'cat messagebody' is critical, don't remove it

The order in uuencode you originally wrote is correct. If I put messagebody.txt  first it tells me it does not exist.

So everything is OK, but you need to add a couple of empty lines to the end of messagebody file.

Yes, adding the blank lines to the message body did the trick. I wonder why?

Could you elaborate a bit about the overall logic?  But in particular about the use of the pipes, and of the trailing dash.

I'm glad that it works. mailx expects message from standard input in text form. Command 'cat messagebody -' concatenates content of file 'messagebody' with
output from previous command in pipe, i.e. uuencode, and sends it to mailx. So you need blank lines to separate content of 'messagebody' file from encoded attachment.
