HP, Unix, Backup/Restore

Hi All,
I'am trying to restore the backup in windows(any verson) , which was taken in Compaq Tru64 Unix system. The backup was taken using 'vdump' command and currently i don't have any unix system to restore the same. Can anybody guide me in restoring this in windows.

I would see if any of the Cygwin tools can handle this.

Other option is to create a dual boot machine with linux or use a Live CD ( Knoppix, Ubuntu etc )

I would first find out what vdump is compatible with.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that there is no (!) other way than restoring using vrestore on Tru64

http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Tru64-UNIX-Managers/2007-01/msg00019.html confirms that.  vdump/vrestore are only available on Tru64.

Hi,
Thanx to all u guys who took the pain to help me out with various views and thoughts which are valuable. Kindly clarify one more point in regard to the same issue, can i use any unix flavour to restore using ' vrestore ' command or do i have to depend completely on Tru64 only.

I can only repeat: vdump/vrestore are only available on Tru64. So yes, you absolutely require a Tru64 system.

svs is correct, you need a tru64 system to restore these files. If you want to move these files over to a windows system. Create a dump using tar or cpio. There is a tool which can open these archives in windows called altap salamander

I already said that you will need vrestore on Tru64 -- no way around this.

If you want to be portable, create tar archives which can be read by most
of the usuals archiving tool on windows (winzip, winrar, 7zip, etc.), too
