Question

SGI Irix 6.5 X startup problem

Asked by: rex007

I have a SGI here running on Irix 6.5 with X windows installed. It's using a Flat screen as monitor and it's been loaned to us as a demo so I don't have any documentation and I'm far from being an expert n them.
Yesterday, a user asked me to change the screen definition because everything looked too big. So I went into the system properties and changed the resolution. When X restarted, it was set out of range for the monitor, That is, the monitor can't display the GUI because either the refresh, or definition is too high so it either turns off or shows an extremely garbled screen(completely unreadable).

I am able to enter the machine at the command prompt using single user mode, but it is set to start X at boot so I can't start the machine in "normal" mode.

can someone tell me what file needs to be modified for the resolution to be set lower so I can start up the machine normally and reconfigur it properly please.

Remember, this is NOT Red Hat or manrake. It doesn't have an XF86Setup or anything like that to do it at the command prompt and I can't find anything on the internet that tells me where to edit. I've waisted most of my day on this and I really need a good answer fast.

Thank's

okay. It's been a few weeks but I think I can tell you what I remember.

Now under the x11 directory, Damn I wish I still had the machine here so I could find the exact name. Anyhow, you'll have to find a
directory with a name that refers to monitors. Somewhere in there, there is a directory with a bunch of text files. Each of them
refers to a particuliar make and model of monitor.  So you'll get files that are called some things like "sonyTrinitron" or
"ViewSonic" and so on. One of those files will be called something like "default" or "costom-Monitor".

You can VI into the file to read it if you want. It sets all that parameters X will use. Once you're pretty confident you've found
the right file, remember where it is, rename it to something.bak and then reboot. If you got the right one, the
system will not be able to find the file and will then go to default mode witch will work on pretty much any system.

If it still doesn't work, easy enough to guess, go back to single mode, rename you something.bak file to it's original name
and try again on another file.

It's trial and error and it took me a while to find the right one, but it worked.

Good luck.
