The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. Redhat 8.0 and remote Xserver (Exceed) woes: OK for 4 months; apply RH's Up2date and Exceed and Cygwin/XFree86 broken

I had been running RH8.0 for about four months, using Hummingbird's Exceed 6.2 to connect from my Win2000 desktop (Everything is behind a firewall). I set up XDMCP for the remote using the clear, well written instructions of Thomas Chao in the XDMCP-Howto. Everything worked fine for four months.

I have also been using RH's up2date all along with no problems--that is until about three weeks ago. I updated a  bunch of packages, including the kernel, samba, and a bunch of other patches. After the update, things still worked fine until I rebooted.

After rebooting, I can no longer get a session from Exceed. I can login in with ssh text mode). I have no problems with the Xserver locally (i.e. the monitor connected to the machine). I can also remotely login using  VNC. But I cannot use Cygwin's XFree86 (same problem as Exceed).

I can't think of what is stopping the Xsession. Does anyone have any clues? I'm stuck!
