Gentoo nVidia XFree86 problem

my system is a pentiumIII Celeron (coppermine) 900 mhz, intel 440bx chipset, 512 megs sdram, with an AGP nVidia Gefroce2 MX400 card...
i can't startx or XFree86 -configure, it will just go to a blank screen...i went to the nvidia website and downloaded a driver......i followed the crappy instructions provided, and "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run" was the command, it compiled the kernel interface for me, so it said.....i have no clue what it did, or what i should do, since startx or XFree86 -configure still do not work....i haven't made any changes to x config files.....i want to run NVAGP.....can someone walk me through this please?
