I guess you are asking to boot in graphical mode? If that is the case just edit /etc/inittab doing the command "pico /etc/inittab" and change the runlevel from 3 to 5. Please restate your question for better answers.

This is expected...

You need to run X server to your monitor via your videocard ("server" here has nothing to do with web- or file- servers)
Please login in text mode and post here what it tells when you enter "uname -a" after prompt

You write with text editor, commonly vi, but as a newbie you may find pico or mc editors more entertaining
After you are done tou compile this program using gcc -o executable -c program.c
