Disable screen blanking.

I'm running Redhat 9 with Gnome 2.2.0. I'm trying to run Etherape. Got everything working...but after a while, my screen goes blank. How do I disable screen blanking? I need to run this app without the screen turning off on me.

The default on RedHat 9, as I recall, is a blamk screen saver. You can disable that via "Preferences->Screensaver"

Nope, that didn't do the trick. Actually, when I load up the Screensaver app, the system complains that the xscreensaver daemon isn't running. When I tried to enable it, it gave me some warnings that I didn't quite understand (I'm new to Linux) and basically, the system wouldn't turn it on. Still, I went in and hit disable screensaver, but the system still blanks the screen, and actually, after a while, throws the monitor into power saver mode.

Then you'll need to turn of APM options, not the screensaver.  I think in redhat (which I normally use but am in *gasp* Windows at the moment) you choose "K Menu > Preferences > Something-or-other > Power".  Then drag all three sliders to the left ("Disabled").  Of course, this assumes that you are using KDE.  For Gnome, I'm not sure.  Check the hardware or power preferences.  I think you can use KDE menus in Gnome though, so you might try reaching the KDE preferences from there.

Okay, try 'xset s off' for X (see 'man xset' for details). To disable screen blanking in text mode use 'setterm -blank 0'

OK, so next question is... How do I make these changes permanent? Looks like the options are not kept when I reboot.

If you want to disable screen blanking in X each time it starts simply include the xset command before starting the window manager in .xinitrc in your home directory.  For example, I load some different X resources for applications and my ~/.xinitrc looks like:

xrdb -merge .Xresources
exec gnome-session
